Initial Ideas

Our discussion began with the idea of doing a pop-punk band, we chose this genre because it is one we all like, and we all knew and liked bands from this particular genre. We then  looked into and explored some bands from this genre, we considered Green Day, Blink 182, Fall out Boy, Paramore and many others. Through thinking about pop-punk bands, we realised that most of them are American and that we would try to focus our attention more towards American bands. We watched music videos from multiple bands, and came up with many genre conventions featured in them. They all had a theme of either authority, abandonment and loneliness, usually in keeping with the lyrics in the song.  We noticed that many of them contained bright colours, often with both a narrative and performance aspect, and the storyline was typically following an outcast or loner. They often had strange story lines, for example, Sugar We're Going Down by Fall out boy, which depicts the outsider with deer antlers, adding a visual element to show his differences. We also watched 9 in the Afternoon by Panic! At The Disco, which has a fairytale, Alice in Wonderland theme and we then decided that we would like to incorporate a fairytale element into our video. We researched fairy-tales, and discovered  Brothers Grimm, who wrote dark and twisted stories, and decided to use their ideas in our video idea.

This led to use coming up with ideas on how to create these fairytale style elements in our video, and we thought that through using costume, make-up and lighting/effects,we would be able to create the theme and style we wanted.
